Student-Teacher Programme

We give our graduates an opportunity to extend their music knowledge and performing skills to the next generation - learning the art of teaching; we found that this course has some hidden advantages to our young adult musicians too.

What Skills do they gain?

Through their experience in STP, every student would have grown an important set of skills that will help them both personally and professionally in their future.

Time Management & Organisation

Teaching multiple classes, being punctual, managing their priorities, planning and preparing lessons.

Communication

Learning to communicate with children as young as 5 and with parents, informing them of their child's progress.

Observation & Analysis

Observing a student's repertoire and finding solutions to best teach. Report writing for progress reviews.

Self Confidence

Teaching builds self-esteem in a positive way as they're helping their students learn.

Prerequisites for STP

In order to enroll in this programme, we require that the teachers-to-be are well-prepared and qualified to teach younger students without any difficulties and minimal guidance.

  • Must have passed Grade 8 Piano Practical Examination - ABRSM or Trinity College London.
  • Theory – Grade 6 level or above - ABRSM.
  • Must be over the age of 16.

Three Stages of STP

01

Junior Teacher

Commit to at least 3 hrs/week of teaching and professional development sessions.
After a year (or age of 18), junior teachers will complete the teaching diploma course by Trinity College London - ATCL which requires a commitment of at least 5-8 hrs/week  in addition to the teaching and professional development sessions.

Intermediate Teacher

Currently with a ACTL Teaching Diploma.
Apply for Institute of Registered Music Teacher NZ (IRMTNZ) with “Student Graduate” status to kick start your teaching career professionally as IRMTNZ will provide the following benefits:
  • Mentoring and assistance an IRMTNZ associate
  • Be listed as a teacher on the IRMTNZ’s website
  • Receive a copy of IRMTNZ journal Ritmico
  • Attend seminars, masterclasses and professional development courses run by IRMTNZ branches
  • Attend Teacher Training Courses run by the institute.

Senior Teacher

Once you've passed every criteria and successfully obtained
the title AIRMT NZ (Associate of Institute of Registered Music Teacher New Zealand), you've reached the final stage of the programme and is given recognition as a Senior Teacher.
